What Your Libido Is Really Telling You: The Health Signals Many Women Miss

A change in libido is often one of the first things women notice and one of the last things they feel comfortable talking about. For some, it happens gradually, a subtle decline in desire that only becomes obvious in hindsight. For others, it feels more sudden. One day they realise they have little interest in sex and begin to wonder whether something is wrong with their relationship, their hormones or even themselves.

Libido Reflects Whole Body Health

Sexual desire does not exist in isolation. Rather, it reflects the interaction of multiple interconnected systems throughout the body and brain. Researchers often describe libido as having three key dimensions: biological, emotional and cognitive.(1) In other words, sexual desire is influenced not only by hormones, but also by mood, motivation, relationships, thoughts and overall wellbeing.

This helps explain why changes in libido can occur for many different reasons. Hormonal fluctuations, stress, poor sleep, anxiety, relationship challenges, low energy availability and changes in physical health can all influence sexual desire. As women move through perimenopause and menopause, these factors often overlap.(1) Declining levels of oestrogen and testosterone may affect the biological foundations of libido, while symptoms such as disrupted sleep, mood changes, vaginal dryness and increased life stressors can further influence sexual wellbeing.

For this reason, libido is best viewed as a whole body experience rather than a single hormonal event. Understanding the biological, emotional and cognitive factors that contribute to sexual desire allows for a more comprehensive and compassionate approach to supporting women's health.(1)

Stress, Cortisol and Sexual Desire

Stress is one of the most influential factors affecting libido. Sexual desire is shaped not only by reproductive hormones but also by the body's broader stress response systems. Hormonal Shifts and Sexual Desire

Hormones play a central role in shaping libido throughout a woman's life. Oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone all influence sexual desire, arousal and sexual satisfaction and their levels naturally fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, reproductive years and menopause transition. Many women notice changes in libido at different stages of their cycle. Desire often feels strongest around ovulation, when oestrogen and testosterone levels peak. Collectively, these changes can influence both sexual desire and overall sexual wellbeing.(3)

Importantly, these shifts are not a sign that the body is failing. Rather, they reflect a normal and expected physiological transition. The goal is not to fight or override these changes but to support the body through them.
